A casual observer might assume that the two H’s in H&H Pool Services stand for Hawes & Hawes – after owner David Hawes and his wife, Paulette. Actually, they stand for His & Hers, a title passed on to Hawes by his parents, who started working in the pool construction business over 30 years ago.
“Dad used to have a clean-up company that would come into a job site after the gunite crew finished the pool. This was back in the old days when they left a big mess behind,” Hawes says. “We had big dump trucks, and my mom and dad used to shovel sand and load cement under the name H&H Pool Clean-Up.” The name later changed to H&H Pool Center when the couple opened up a pool supply store in Newark, CA, off the southeast corner of the San Francisco Bay.
As an adolescent, Hawes worked part-time for his parents, but in 1971, he launched his own business after signing on his first service account. More than three decades later, “I still have that customer on service.”
